A garden really has a deeper meaning than just being a bunch of different kinds of plants put together. Anyone can enjoy this hobby from an amateur to someone with a very green thumb. It can be relaxing and a great way to tackle stress in your life. It can teach you about the wonders of nature. The effects can be profound if you're good at it.

Put sod down the right way. Get your soil ready before you lay your sod. Remove weeds and break your soil until all the clumps are gone. When the soil is clean, pack it tightly and create a flat surface. Gently sprinkle water on the soil until you are certain that it is thoroughly moistened. Sod must be arranged in staggered rows; each joint should offset one another. Cut away extra sod and save it to fill in gaps you may create later. You will have to water the sod every day for 2 weeks, and then it should be firmly rooted to the ground, and able to be walked on.

Choose plant strains that will give you the best harvest with the biggest yield. Frequently, a hybrid plant will produce a higher yield because of its disease-resistant properties.

Tempt your cat away from the plants he has been bothering by planting catnip or wheat grass near them. Another option is to place offensively smelling objects on the topsoil near and around the plants you want to protect. Citrus peels or mothballs are a couple of examples.

For weeds that aren't in the middle of your plants, use boiling water to kill their roots. This is a safe way to eliminate weeds, as this will not damage the soil. Just pour out the water on the weeds being careful to avoid any nearby plants. The water will kill the weeds by destroying the roots and if poured directly on the weeds, will prevent them from growing back.

Split up your irises. The more you divide clusters of irises, the more your irises will multiply. After the foliage dies, pick up bulbous irises. The bulbs should split up normally in the hand, and should flower when replanted for the next year. Rhizomes, however, need to be divided by using a gardening knife. Discard the center and cut pieces from the exterior. Each piece should retain a minimum of one sturdy offshoot capable of spurting new growth. Immediately replant all your selected cuttings.

If you are planning on growing peas, start them indoors before putting them outdoors in your garden. The seeds will grow better in your home if planted there first. This method also results in hardier seedlings that can better resist insects and disease. After the seedlings have grown strong indoors, it will be time for you to transplant them to outdoor beds.

Use these tips to create the ideal garden. When the day comes that your plants are tall and smiling, you will be too. Garden can completely change your life if you allow it to, so start today.
